Wudongde Hydropower Station is located at the junction of Luquan County, Yunnan Province and Huidong County, Sichuan Province, with a total installed capacity of 10.2 million kilowatts. It is the first cascade of four cascade power stations (Wudongde, Baihetan, Xiluodu, and Xiangjiaba) on the lower reaches of the Jinsha River It is the fourth largest hydropower station in China and the seventh largest in the world. The water retaining structure is a concrete double-curvature arch dam. The crest height is 988 meters, the maximum dam height is 270 meters, the bottom thickness is 51 meters, and the thickness-to-height ratio is only 0.19. It is the world's thinnest 300-meter super high arch dam. It is also the world's first ultra-high arch dam where the entire dam is poured with low-heat cement concrete. On December 24, 2015, the Wudongde Hydropower Station was fully started. On March 16, 2017, the dam concrete of Wudongde Hydropower Station was opened and poured.
On June 29, 2020, the first unit of Wudongde Hydropower Station was officially put into operation, and Xi Jinping gave important instructions to the first unit of Wudongde Hydropower Station on the Jinsha River.
Construction progress
From April 20 to 23, 2015, the General Institute of Hydropower and Water Conservancy Planning and Design hosted a meeting in Beijing to review and pass the "Feasibility Study Report on Jinsha River Wudongde Hydropower Station" (part of the hub). The meeting concluded that the report reached The requirements for the content and depth of the survey and design work in the feasibility study stage were basically agreed with the report. On December 16, Premier Li Keqiang of the State Council presided over an executive meeting of the State Council to approve the Jinsha River Wudongde Hydropower Station Expansion Project that has been included in the relevant national planning and has construction conditions. On December 24, the main part of the Wudongde Hydropower Project officially started.
On March 16, 2017, the dam concrete of Wudongde Hydropower Station was opened and poured.
As of June 4, 2019, the three major bidding sections of the dam project, the left bank underground power station, and the spillway tunnel are at the peak of intense construction. On December 18, the second unit of Wudongde Hydropower Station and Unit 6 of the first unit on the left bank realized the rotor hoisting.

On February 13, 2020, the rotor of Unit 5 of the underground power station on the left bank of Wudongde Hydropower Station was successfully hoisted. On February 16, the rotor of the fourth hydro-generator unit was successfully hoisted. So far, Wudongde Hydropower Station has 4 units in the final assembly stage. On May 6, the second stage of the Wudongde Hydropower Project on the Jinsha River was impounded to 945 meters and passed the acceptance check. According to the acceptance opinion, the water level of the Udonde project will rise to 940 meters in May and to 945 meters in early June. After the water storage reached 945 meters, the first batch of units of the Wudongde Hydropower Station were equipped with water commissioning conditions, laying a solid foundation for the safe and punctual realization of the power generation target in July.
On May 4, 2020, the last dam section of the Wudongde Hydropower Station dam was poured. The main part of the dam was poured from the top to the top. A total of 15 dam sections were poured. The total amount of concrete poured was about 2.7 million cubic meters. Since the concrete pouring of the first warehouse of the dam on March 16, 2017, it took three years and two months to achieve the “double-hundred goal” of the dam’s annual rise of 100 meters and the concrete pouring of 1 million square meters for two consecutive years. Low-heat cement concrete dam technology has been successful. At present, the Wudongde Hydropower Station has fully entered the 945-meter water storage stage.
On June 29, 2020, the first two units of 850,000 kilowatts of Wudongde Hydropower Station were officially put into operation. Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, President of the State and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, recently issued important instructions on the commissioning of the first batch of units of the Wudongde Hydropower Station on the Jinsha River. The cadres and the masses who have contributed to the construction of the project expressed their sincere greetings.
On July 11, 2020, the third unit of Wudongde Hydropower Station was successfully put into operation for power generation. All units of the hydropower station are planned to be completed and put into operation before July 2021.
From August 4 to 8, 2020, an expert team led by the General Institute of Hydropower and Water Conservancy Planning and Design conducted the third stage of water storage to 965 meters for the Jinsha River Wudongde Hydropower Station, and agreed to store it in mid-August 2020. The water level reached 958 meters, and the water level reached 965 meters in late August. The normal storage level of the reservoir formed by the dam retaining water is 975 meters, which corresponds to a storage capacity of 5.863 billion cubic meters. The arch dam needs to block 8.09 million tons of thrust formed by the reservoir water body.
